Redmond Pool Public Art

OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

recommendation

The 1972 Redmond Pool is undergoing a significant renovation to replace mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems; the roof; and updating the locker rooms, lobby, and pool deck. Using the 2017 Public Art Plan and LACE criteria as a guide, it was decided to integrate public art into this project. After an exhaustive search, the Arts & Culture Commission approved the selection of artists Pete Goldlust and Melanie Germond to design art for the façade and at the street that welcomes visitors. The artwork is scheduled for installation in Q1 2021

OUTCOMES:

The 2017 Public Art Plan identified priorities for public art.  In the short term, 2017-2022, the plan allowed for some flexibility to integrate public art into capital improvement projects that meet the LACE Criteria.  The key criteria include:

1.                     Does the project have prominence in the public realm?  Yes

2.                     Is it located within the right of way, a civic building, park/open space, an infrastructure project, or in an urban center?  Yes, it is a civic building within a community park.

3.                     Does the project rank 3 or above for potential public impact?  Yes, if it is located within the building it would have approximately 100,000 views per year.  If it is located outside, it would have multiple times that number.

4.                     Is there an opportunity for an artist on the design team?  Yes, the design team highlighted opportunities for art that would work with the scope of work and timeline.  All options are site-specific.
