OUTCOMES:

The King County Solid Waste Division (KCSWD) is the planning authority for and owner and operator

of the solid waste transfer and disposal system serving the residents and businesses in

unincorporated King County and in most cities in King County. The KCSWD and partner cities have

committed jointly to ambitious waste avoidance and reduction goals in numerous planning

documents, including the King County Comprehensive Solid Waste Management Plan (“Comp Plan”)

and the K4C Commitment. These documents set goals to achieve zero waste of resources by 2030,

meaning no materials of value are sent to the landfill. The City of Redmond's Environmental Sustainability Action Plan also sets meaningful and aggressive goals around waste reduction, including diverting 70% of

Redmond's waste from the landfill and reducing garbage disposed per person.

King County’s Re+ Strategic Plan (see Attachment A) is King County’s action plan to achieve these zero waste goals. A systemic shift is needed to move from a throwaway economy to one focused more upon the circular use of resources. The plan was developed by the Zero Waste of Resources Task Force, a

collaborative effort of King County, cities, haulers, and community members, including Environmental Programs Manager, Aaron Moldver, from the City. The task force met and identified and prioritized actions to inform the Re+ Plan.

Re+ focuses on reducing use of single-use items, promoting reuse, recycling what is left, and working

toward a more circular economy. Re+ seeks to minimize waste by keeping valuable materials in use

and out of the landfill. By signing the Re+ Pledge, the City recognizes that the success of Re+ requires collaboration between King County and local jurisdictions to support the shared vision that Re+ represents.
