Stormwater Permit Presentation - NPDES 101

OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

recommendation

Redmond’s Stormwater Utility and its city partners implement a suite of programs to protect Redmond’s stormwater system, creeks, river, lake, and groundwater, from pollution and physical degradation associated with stormwater runoff.  Many of these programs are driven by a federal clean water permit called the Municipal Stormwater National Pollutant Discharge Elimination (NPDES) Phase II Permit.  This permit is issued to Redmond every five years and is administered by the Washington Department of Ecology.

This informational presentation will cover the following:

                     NPDES regulatory background

                     Redmond’s NPDES permit obligations

                     Stormwater Operations Highlights

                     Related Utility Program activities

OUTCOMES:

Implementing Stormwater Utility programs help protect the municipal separate storm sewer system from damage and protect receiving waters, including salmon-bearing creeks and Redmond’s shallow drinking water aquifer, from physical and chemical impacts of stormwater runoff. Effective implementation also helps assure full compliance with Clean Water Act permit requirements contained in the Western Washington Phase II Municipal Stormwater Permit.
