Status Update on Downtown Adaptive Signal Control Project

OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
recommendation
Adaptive signal control technology monitors traffic in real time and automatically adjusts signal timings to match changing conditions, improving flow and overall system performance. Traffic varies throughout the day due to seasonal and weather impacts, variations in work and telecommuting schedules, increased errand and delivery trips, and interactions with new light rail stations. The system responds to these fluctuations by continuously updating timing plans.

This staff report provides a brief overview of Adaptive Signal Control technology and an update on the status, progress, and implementation of the Downtown Adaptive Signal Control project. The report also provides a preview of planned work for the Overlake Adaptive Signal Control project.

Relevant Plans/Policies:
This study session aligns the Adaptive Signal Control work with the Redmond 2050 Comprehensive Plan – Transportation Element, which seeks to improve mobility and support an efficient multimodal network. Adaptive signal timing helps meet those policy goals by improving reliability during changing traffic conditions throughout the day, week, and seasons.

The project also carries out strategies in the Transportation Master Plan (TMP) to use proven technology that enhances system efficiency, supports movement of people and goods, and improves operational safety. Adaptive signal timing supports these strategi...
