City of Redmond Operations Zero Carbon Strategy
1. Resolution No. 1550: A Resolution of the City Council of the City of Redmond, Washington, Adopting the City of Redmond Operations Zero Carbon Strategy
OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
recommendation
Staff will review the City of Redmond Operations Zero Carbon Strategy (Attachment A) and seek adoption of the Strategy by resolution. The Strategy outlines an ambitious approach to reduce emissions and shift operations to a low carbon future. It includes a baseline greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory and a technical analysis of the actions necessary to work towards carbon neutrality by 2030.
The Zero Carbon Strategy approach maximizes climate benefits, increases accountability, encourages cost savings, improves health, and demonstrates leadership. It directly supports implementation of the Environmental Sustainability Action Plan (ESAP), Action C3.4, and the 2020 Climate Emergency Declaration (plan development objective).
The Strategy quantifies a path to reduce GHG emissions by 75 percent by 2030 through direct actions such as fleet and facility electrification, investments in clean energy, energy efficiency upgrades, and more. Remaining emissions in 2030 stem from the City's vehicle fleet and employee commuting. Technology advances and offsets will be necessary to meet the Strategy goals.
