Approval of an Interlocal Agreement Between King County and the City of Redmond for Misdemeanor Jail Services

OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

recommendation

body

The City of Redmond is responsible for housing inmates detained on City misdemeanor charges. The City currently contracts with South Correctional Entity (SCORE), located in Des Moines and relies primarily on this jail for services for City defendants. The City also contracts with King County for jail services located in Seattle and at the Regional Justice Center in Kent. The King County Jail is a back-up option for the City as the City detains most of its defendants at SCORE.  The King County agreement is for a term of two years, for 2021-2022.

This Interlocal Agreement takes effect on January 1, 2021 and expires on December 31, 2022. The agreement will provide the City the ability to house inmates at the King County Jail on an as needed basis.

ANTICIPATED RESULT IF NOT APPROVED:

The King County Jail is not the City’s primary housing option. If not approved, the City would need to explore other options for alternative jail services, however, these options are limited.
