Work Plan Adjustment for Climate Emergency Topic
OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

During the September 7, 2021, Business Meeting, Council voted to add climate emergency as a standing agenda topic on the Public Safety Committee of the Whole meeting. Council raised two items for further discussion, including:
1. Structural changes necessary to add sustainability to the Public Safety Committee Work Plan. The current Work Plan is included as Attachment A. Any changes to the Work Plan through the remainder of the year must be approved by the Committee Chair and should be coordinated with the Chief of Police and Fire Chief. Committee structures, including naming and work plans, will be reevaluated and discussed at the October 12, 2021 Study Session.
2. Sustainability work plan topics to guide future agendas. A summary of topics discussed by Council is included in Attachment B. An overview of Environmental Sustainability Action Plan and Climate Emergency Declaration-related topics that will be covered during upcoming Study Sessions and Business meetings is also included for reference in Attachment B.

Per Council’s direction, climate emergency topics has been placed on the Public Safety Committee of the whole agenda for further discussion. Attachment B outlines potential topics that could be highlighted for Council consideration.
In October, staff will bring to the Council options for restructuring the Committees of the Whole and the pros and cons of each option as well as a recommendation and timeline for moving forward.
