III. DESCRIPTION/BACKGROUND

RCW 46.61.440 describes where school speed zones shall be located. The speed zone shall be located either 300ft from the marked school crosswalk or 300ft from the border of the school or playground property.

Redmond has twenty-four school zones identified in RMC 10.24.065 School zones. Each zone is identified by the street location and zone limits. Twenty-three of them include school zones that begin and end 300ft from the marked school crosswalk and one school zone begins and ends 300ft from the school and school playground property.

Requests were received from Sergeant Julie Beard, Einstein Elementary's Principal, as well as a school parent, to extend the school zone east of school property. A large apartment complex exists east of the school property. Many children walk to and from school on the sidewalk in this proposed school zone extension area.

Currently the ordinance for NE 116th St states the school zone ends 300ft east of the marked school crosswalk. This ends the school zone at the entrance to the school.
